Guiding Principles
Kijani Energy has identified eight guiding principles that will be the hallmarks of its business operations in Mozambique and around the world. These guiding principles will ensure that we stays true to our values in meeting our goals and objectives:

Commitment to Transparency

We will provide adequate information to all relevant stakeholders on environmental and social issues to allow for effective participation in decision-making.

Compliance with Applicable Laws and Regulations

We will comply with all applicable local, national and ratified international laws and regulations.

Commitment to Long Term Economic and Financial Viability

We will implement a management and operational plan that achieves long-term economic and financial viability, providing security of employment to our workers and security of supply to its customers.

Use of Appropriate Best Practices

We will appropriately document and monitor implemented procedures. Specifically, we will implement procedures to ensure optimal and sustained high yields; control erosion and prevent degradation of soils; maintain quality and availability of surface and ground water; effectively manage pests and diseases; responsibly and safely use agrochemicals; adhere to an effective occupational health and safety plan; and invest in the highest quality employee training.

Environmental Responsibility and Conservation of Natural Re-sources and Biodiversity

We will maximize the use of renewable energy in our operations and will otherwise minimize negative environmental impacts, while maximizing the positive environmental impacts. We will also identify rare or endangered species on our plantations, if any, and take into account their conservation in our management and operational plans.

Responsible Consideration of Employees and of Individuals and Communities Affected by Plantations

For our Jatropha operations, we are committed to using only uninhabited land not previously used for agricultural purposes. We will also identify, in a participatory manner, aspects of our operations that impact local communities and mitigate any negative impacts while promoting positive impacts. Pay and conditions for employees and for employees of contractors will always, at least, meet legal or industry minimum standards and be sufficient to meet basic needs of personnel and to provide some discretionary income. We will not, under any circumstances, employ child labour or expose children to hazardous working conditions.

We will not discriminate based on race, caste, national origin, religion, disability, gender, sexual orientation, union membership, political affiliation, or age. A policy to prevent sexual harassment and all other forms of violence against women and to protect their reproductive rights will also be developed and applied.

Responsible Development of New Plantings

We will undertake comprehensive and participatory independent social and environmental impact assessments prior to establishing new plantings or operations, or expanding existing ones, and the results will be incorporated into planning, management and operations.

Commitment to Continuous Improvement

We will regularly monitor and review our activities and develop and implement action plans that allow demonstrable continuous improvement in key operations.
