Community Advancement Programme

At Kijani Energy, Corporate Social Responsibility is more than just a buzz word—it is an integral part of our core values and our vision for the type of company with which we want to be associated. We have a three-pronged approach to our community advancement programme.
  1. Working with smallholder Jatropha farmers to improve techniques, yields and profitability and to ensure a market outlet for production.
  2. Providing stable full-time employment for surrounding communities.
  3. Supporting community projects through the work of Fundação Kijani and in co-operation with specialist NGOs.

Investing in our people and communities is a sound business and social decision, and our social responsibiilty commitments and the work of Fundação Kijani are a key component in making our vision of a triple bottom-line company into a reality and turning our business plan into a success.

In living up to these commitments, we will consider the social and community implications of every decision and we will strive to be constantly aware of opportunities to contribute positively to the welfare of our workers and communities.

For example, in maintaining access roads to our agricultural locations, we will take account of local routes of circulation and assist, wherever possible, in the year-round maintenance of nearby secondary roads (which are often crucial for market access for smallholder farmers). In our power generation business plan, we will take specific account of possibilities to link nearby communities to the national power grid. In our skill development program, we will work with technical institutes in improving their educational facilities and curricula. In providing healthcare assistance to our workers, we will make our facilities available to nearby communities.

In every instance, we will ensure co-ordination with the local, provincial and central authorities to maximize synergies.
