About Kijani Energy
ImageKijani Energy Ltd. is a development-stage sustainable energy company with large-scale Jatropha Curcas cultivation operations in Mozambique--through its subsidiary Odeveza S.A. of Mozambique--and the production of inedible vegetable oil and biodiesel from the plant’s seeds. Strategically, the Company believes that securing the feedstock will help to mitigate availability issues and keep the cost of production under control. Accordingly, Kijani's operational efforts during 2008-09 are focused on bringing online its cultivation operations in Mozambique and assessing plans for its processing and refining facilities (which are expected to become operational over the next two-three years).

Kijani is the Swahili word for "green" or "greenery". It is widely used to depict prosperity, grassroots development of communities, preservation of endangered species, agricultural development and concern for the environment. Living up to this broad concept and interpretation is the central aspiration and motivation for Kijani Energy -- as our contribution to a better and "greener" world.

The recent debate over biofuel and its impact on food prices--though at times misguided--has certainly served to highlight the massive potential for sustainable crops like Jatropha as well as the role they can play in the near future. With the demand for diesel, and especially biodiesel, growing around the world and with the high prices of crude petroleum oil, it has become ever more important to identify other sources of fuel, and Jatropha is one of the better alternatives.

Kijani Energy is focused on being a triple bottom-line company that will always be economically profitable, socially responsible and environmentally friendly. As a labour-intensive crop, Jatropha promises to contribute significantly towards the improvement in standards of living of rural populations, amongst whom poverty is most acute. In addition, Odeveza’s social programs and intention to work actively with smallholder farmers have been widely praised as key and innovative contributions to both economic and social development goals. The Company’s focus on social and environmental considerations is also in line with the emerging consensus that, with the world on the verge of unprecedented growth in the use of biofuels, their production should meet relatively strict sustainability criteria.
