The Promise of Green Energy
At Kijani Energy, we believe in the potential for green energy to solve the twin challenges of climate change and economic development. While oil has proved its value as an energy resource, the emerging energy model will involve diversification in both sources and geography. To ensure that these new sources are economically profitable and environmentally sustainable, it is necessary to promote public debate and to encourage the development of appropriate policy frameworks.

At the same time, a global village cannot exist in peace and security amid large pockets of poverty and desperation. Fortunately, some of the areas most in need of stronger economic development have the potential to become substantial green energy producers. Studies conducted for the International Energy Agency show that sub-Saharan Africa has the most potential in terms of sustainable bioenergy production, with Mozambique attaining the status of “potential bioenergy superpower”. To ensure that production in these regions is both environmentally sustainable and socially responsible, it is necessary to encourage substantial public participation in the formulation of policies and the design of investment projects.

At Kijani Energy, we believe that good business, sound policy and broad public discussion are mutually reinforcing. To play our part, we are committed to a triple bottom-line approach and to two specific initiatives: (1) launching a series of public conferences and seminars at the Universidade Católica de Moçambique in Beira; and (2) using our website as a medium for the dissemination of our views on key matters of public policy and industry concern.
